Fotohaus

Every photo you’ve taken, at home on your Mac.

Fotohaus sorts the folders you already have into a library you can search, edit and enjoy. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is moved.

Version 1.0.1 · free · Apple silicon, macOS 14 or newer

Or with Homebrew: brew install --cask aelnagish/tap/fotohaus

First launch: if macOS says Fotohaus “is damaged”, click Cancel, not Move to Trash. Here’s the one-line fix.

Years of folders, sorted in minutes

Flip through a folder in a blink

Double-click any photo in Finder and it opens straight away over your desktop. Press ← and → to move through the rest of the folder. There’s nothing to import first.

  • Zoom with the scroll wheel, star or rotate as you go
  • A filmstrip of the whole folder along the bottom
  • Esc takes you back to what you were doing
← → through a whole folder

Find anyone, and anything

Type a name, a place, a year or what’s in the picture. Fotohaus recognises faces, objects, scenes and even the words in a photo, all on your Mac.

  • Name a face once and Fotohaus suggests the same person across the years
  • Search for “receipt” or a street sign and find the picture
  • Combine filters: person:anna place:zermatt year:2019
Results while you type

Edit without fear

One-click fixes, fine tuning and more than 40 effects. Your original is always kept, so every change can be undone, even years later.

  • Auto enhance, straighten, crop, red-eye and retouch
  • Light, shadows, highlights and colour temperature
  • Copy a look and paste it onto a whole batch
Try it, undo it, try another

On this day

Each day Fotohaus gathers the pictures you took on today’s date in earlier years, ready to play as a slideshow. Every photo also knows where it was taken, worked out offline from a built-in atlas.

  • “2 years ago”, “3 years ago”, right at the top of your library
  • A Places map with real town names
  • Search for a town and see every photo from there
Two years ago today

Private by design

There’s no account and no cloud. Faces, search and editing all run on your Mac, and your photos stay in the folders you put them in.

Private collection

Move pictures to Private and they disappear from the library, search and Memories. Opening it takes Touch ID or your Mac password.

Archive

Tuck away screenshots and receipts you want to keep but not see every day. They stay on disk and come back with one click.

Recently Deleted

Anything you delete waits 30 days before it goes to the Trash, so a slip of the finger is never final.

Coming from Picasa?

Point Fotohaus at your old Picasa folders and your stars, captions, albums, face tags and edits are all there. They’re read straight from the .picasa.ini files Picasa left behind, and Fotohaus keeps writing them, so nothing is locked in.

[Picasa] name=2019 Zermatt [IMG_2041.jpg] star=yes caption=First light over the Matterhorn filters=enhance=1;sepia=1; faces=rect64(3f845bcb59418507),8e62398ebda8c1a5

Everything else it does

Organize

  • Stars, captions, nested tags and albums
  • Photo Tray for pictures from many folders
  • Stacks for RAW+JPEG pairs, bursts and Live Photos
  • Rename, move, split folders and fix dates
  • Import from cameras and cards, skipping duplicates

Find

  • Faces, recognised on your Mac
  • Objects, scenes and text inside photos
  • Optional natural-language search
  • Duplicate finder that keeps the best copy
  • Timeline and Places map

Edit

  • One-click fixes and fine tuning
  • More than 40 creative effects
  • Retouch, text, denoise and clarity
  • Originals always kept
  • Batch edits and copy-paste a look

Share and create

  • Collages, slideshows and movies with music
  • Posters, contact sheets and passport photos
  • Print, PDF, email and the Share menu
  • Web gallery and map export
  • Backups to any drive, with restore

Reads JPEG, HEIC, AVIF, PNG, TIFF, WebP, GIF, PSD, camera RAW (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, RAF and more) and common video formats. A command line, fotohaus-cli, and an MCP server let you search and organise from the Terminal or an AI assistant.

Install

Fotohaus runs on Apple silicon Macs (M1 or newer) with macOS 14 Sonoma or newer.

Says “damaged and can’t be opened”? Click Cancel

Nothing is wrong with Fotohaus. macOS says this about every app from the internet that Apple hasn’t notarized yet. It takes ten seconds to fix, once:

  1. Click Cancel, not Move to Trash.
  2. Open Terminal: press ⌘ Space, type Terminal, press Return.
  3. Paste this and press Return:
    xattr -cr /Applications/Fotohaus.app
  4. Open Fotohaus again. That’s it, for this version.

If macOS says it could not verify Fotohaus instead, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Installing with Homebrew skips this step entirely.

The quick way: Homebrew

One command installs Fotohaus, opens it without the first-launch warning and adds fotohaus-cli to your Terminal.

brew install --cask aelnagish/tap/fotohaus

Or install it by hand

  1. Download the disk image

Fotohaus-1.0.1-arm64.dmg (200 MB), or browse all releases.

  2. Drag Fotohaus into Applications

Open the disk image and drag the app onto the Applications folder.

  3. Open it the first time

Fotohaus isn’t notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks before the first launch. If it says the app is damaged, click Cancel and follow the steps above. If it says it could not verify Fotohaus, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Questions

Does Fotohaus upload my photos anywhere?

No. Face recognition, search, place names and editing all run on your Mac. There’s no account, no cloud and no tracking.

Will it move or change my files?

No. Fotohaus works on your folders where they are. Edits are stored alongside the photo and your original is kept, so you can always go back.

Can I use it alongside Apple Photos?

Yes. Fotohaus doesn’t touch the Photos library. Point it at any folders you like, including exports from Photos or Google Takeout.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

Not at the moment. Fotohaus needs an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer) with macOS 14 or newer.

Is it really free?

Yes. Fotohaus is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. You can use, study, share and change it.

How do I uninstall it?

Drag Fotohaus from Applications to the Trash. Your library data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/Fotohaus; delete that folder too if you want it gone completely. Your photos are never touched.

Fotohaus is free for everyone
